The CV-89(*) was part of the URA-8 diversity RTTY receiving setup.  There 
were two CV-89
demodulators and a CM-11 (or CM-22 don't remember which) combiner which 
took the
outputs of the two CV-89's and combined them to drive the TTY loop.  The 
two CV-89's
would be connected to two separate receivers for the diversity operation.

The CV-89 can also work independently without the combiner.

The CV-57 was an earlier demodulator which preceded the CV-89.
