Hi Greg,
This is what I know about the RCA CX55B.
<<It's made out of bakelite and has a red plastic element face plate and
metal rim ring.>>
<<What was this mic used for?>> As my fading memory serves me, the table
version and the handheld version were used as mics for the RCA "Car Fone" series
commercial 2-way rigs. Obviously the table model was for the base station.
Personally, I thought they were really ugly! The only saving grace being the RCA
in the circle in the center of the element cover.
<<What kind of mic elements did they use?>> I seem to recall that they were
ceramic as that seemed to handle the rigors of mobile operation best.
RCA later switched over to the Shure 444 series which were "private labeled"
for them.
