I own and have done critical listening with both and SX-28A
and an SX-62A. For the purposes of this discussion I've
demoted both to "Group B."
Hallicrafters receivers, with the exception of the SX-73,
are consumer radios. Corners were cut in the interest of
price and it shows.
The SX-28 is an OK radio and has a lot of features, but in
actual listening comparisons, I'd pick the AR-88 and
Super-Pro's everytime.
The impressive-looking SX-62 is a rich-man's toy radio.
Making it AM-FM compromised HF performance somewhat.
Biggest bug-a-boo is the lack of bandspread of any sort.
There is a crystal calibrator, but when you use it to align
one band by moving the dial pointer with the front-panel
control, you mess up the others.
The Hallicrafters sets, like most everything else in this
age group, will need to be recapped. Their basic
construction make this something of a nightmare.
Regards,
Al
