I suspect it is much like putting the BFO on while receiving a
foreign SW broadcase but to tell you the truth, that's just
a guess.
Let me know and thanks. Cal, N6KYR.

There are two distinct modes of operation for such a
receiver. Regenerative (not oscillating) and autodyne
(oscillating). That's why there is a regeneration control to
adjust the feedback.

Autodyne detection is used for CW and SSB while
non-oscillatory regeneration is used to amplify AM signals
and increase selectivity through Q multiplication.

The common proceedure is to push the detector into
oscillation, and conduct a "heterodyne search" to find the
station. Then the regeneration is backed off. Strong AM
signals may actually cause the oscillating detector to lock
to the carrier.

You ought to build one of these things for your edification
and enlightenment.

Regards,
Al
