Heat might work. I had an R-390A big MC knob that wouldn't come off due
to what looked like Loctite on the shaft. Tried everything. Finally,
following a list member's suggestion, I heated the knob (potmetal) with a
high wattage soldering gun. The stuff softened up just enough to work the
knob off. As I recall, I had to work it off with a fair amount of steady
force (not snapping action) while still hot. If it cooled, it seized up
again. I imagine heating the knob (or collar or whatever) may also expand
it somewhat faster than the screw which may be thermally insulated (a
bit) by the glop.
You might want to dress up the end of the spline wrench if it is worn to
make sure it has a good grip. If it slips, you'll strip the screw
splines.
