[Boatanchors] IF Can slug question - stuck slug, now what?

I'm starting to notice a trend in the old boat anchor rigs that I pick
up at the flea markets.  The last two I acquired have stuck slugs in the
IF cans and driver coils.  Is there a method to NON DESTRUCTIVLY unstick
them in order to complete alignments?  The last one I gave the muscle
treatment to broke the coil form tube.  I did revive the assembly with
epoxy but it took 2 evenings to get everything back in order.  I just
got a Tempo one with the same syndrome and my hands have suddenly
started shaking and I can't stop sweating.
Any experts out there on this one?
