For the princely sum of less than 4 bux, you can purchase a circuit tester 
from most any hardware store.  This little gem will indicate all types of 
outlet miswiring faults via the display of 3 neon lamps.  It is really nice 
to check out that field day outlet box you just tossed together and of 
course, your house wiring.

I am sure the county electrical inspector who passed this house when it was 
new was on the take.  I found 3 miswired outlets and one that didn't even 
work at all.  In this case, it was the last outlet on the line, which I knew 
from checking out other homes under construction.  The idiot plasterers had 
drywalled over the next to the last outlet and the wires were all just 
hanging in there, no wire nuts, no outlet, no nothing and no power at the 
last outlet! I will not bore you with the other electrical faults I found.
