Well, depends what your novice friend wants - a transceiver or a receiver
only? Apples and oranges, I'd say.
For some specifics, the M2-A does not have 160 or AM features, 75A-4 does.
A-4 also offers you a choice of switchable filters and passband tuning. If
your friend wants a nice SSB and decent AM receiver, get a 75A-4. If he's
looking for a transceiver for communicating, the M2-A is tough to beat. It's
simple, easy to operate(unless the terms 'dip' and 'peak' are unfamiliar),
and close to bullet-proof. Easy to service and most parts are still around.
One of the good thing to come about from the gov'ts involvement with it. It
has many accessories available as well as very sharp appearance. Great rig
overall, has none of the bells and whistles (or associated headaches and
hassles)of the new sandboxes, but manages to communicate and hear quite well
for it's age. Says a lot for the design and quality of the units.
One is completely different from the other, despite the similarity of
manufacturer and spectrum. Both are excellent units for their purpose.
Hope this helps -
