In response to many questions I have received about the mods for the Mohawk RX-1 receiver, here are the references. There was a series of 3 articles in Electric Radio as follows:
Heathkit Mohawk, New Hope For Your, Part One Bonomo 103 Nov-97 20
Heathkit Mohawk, New Hope For Your, Part Two Bonomo 104 Dec-97 20
Heathkit Mohawk, New Hope For Your, Part Three Bonomo 105 Jan-98 20
see: http://www.ermag.com
These address serious design deficiencies in the Mohawk, which include:
- Very ineffective AVC
- Poor Product detector which overloads on SSB/CW
- Restricted audio bandwidth
- VFO drift
These mods can be done as a whole or in part. What's really interesting to me is that just a few component and wiring changes, which could have been incorporated into the original kit design for no extra cost, make an incredible difference in the performance of the rig. The articles also include the addition of new FET-based circuits which further improve it; but I didn't do those mods (yet) and I'm still happy with the results.
