[BARC-List] BARC Question of the Week

Veering away a little bit from the topic...
In the old days, when we in Europe still had to add an obligatory "/P"
behind our callsigns when operating portable, portable means "not connected
to the public electricity network" (which includes field day setups), and
mobile is a specific case of portable, where the transmitter is connected to
the electric system of a car or boat (that is not in international waters).
Maritime Mobile (in international waters) and Aeroplane (Airplane for the
Yanks) Mobile are also special cases of Mobile.
This has been abolished for many years now, with the noteworthy exception of
international operation under CEPT rules. CEPT operation still obliges you
to use the "/P" or "/M" suffix. CEPT doesn't acknowledge "fixed" operation,
and even temporary operation connected to the electricity network should be
designated "portable". This means, that even if you operate from a hotel
using the mains, you are still to use the "/P" designator.
So, a Dutchman in Massachusetts, USA, staying in a hotel and using mains,
must use:
W1/PA3EUG/P
An American in the Netherlands, driving around in a car, should use:
PA/KX1T/P
To make things more complicated, a Dutchman using CEPT in Canada should use:
VE/PA3EUG/P
While an American in Canada (using the reciprocal licensing agreement) uses:
KX1T/VE3 (no mobile or portable addition needed here)
For more CEPT information see for example
http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/regulations/io/cept-list.html and

Usually "portable"means to me the HT attached to a more cumbersome (J-pole,
ground plane, etc.) antenna hanging from a temporary support. In the same
way (since my wife won't let me cut holes in the car) "mobile"means the HT
with a speaker-mike and a decent magmount.
