[BARC-List] Cell phone on the T?

When I took the Red Line in town yesterday, I was deep in a subway tunnel
when the person next to me was talking on his cell phone.   I saw him
originate calls and receive.  My phone was still looking for a signal.

I have Verizon Wireless, which I love.   I asked the person what service
they used, but they did not speak English, and I could not get a
make/model or provider ID from the phone.

Might GSM work in the tunnels?

A curious mind wants to know.
