BARC MAKES HISTORY AT THE BLUE HILL OBSERVATORY

A sincere thank-you and job well done to all the members of the Boston Amateur Radio Club who made Skywarn Recognition Day such a big success at the Blue Hill Observatory in Milton Massachusetts. Several members worked both Friday and Saturday and deserve much credit. It was a great day for BARC, Amateur Radio and the Blue Hill Science Center. We also made history! For the first time since the Observatory began making weather observations in 1885, a radio transmission was made giving the current weather conditions utilizing a “Kite Antenna.” Seventy-Five feet of wire was strung out and then raised up almost 200’ into the air. This put our end-fed long wire vertical at 800’ above sea level. Utilizing the Kite Antenna we made a total of 7 contacts on 15 meters including Montana, Iowa and California. Operating as W1BOS/MQE, over 100 contacts were made on HF and VHF.

The Blue Hill Observatory has the distinction of having the oldest continuous weather records in North America, dating back to 1885.

Thanks once again to all who made this possible.
