I. Hurricane Charley Update

SALVATION ARMY MOBILE DISASTER CANTEENS ON THE FRONT LINES OF RELIEF
EFFORT.
Tampa, FL (August 15, 2004) - The Salvation Army mobile canteen easing its
way towards them was a welcome site for Tom and Susan Prichard of Punta
Gorda whose worst nightmare came true as Hurricane Charley demolished their
home of twenty years. For the Prichard's and thousands more like them
rebuilding their lives is not going to be easy.
"We have seen lots of people on television who had been wiped out by storms
and never thought it would be us one day." Said Tom Prichard. " We're so
thankful for The Salvation Army just being here to give us some food and
water."
With 50 mobile canteens operating in Lee, Charlotte, Sarasota, Hardee,
Desoto, Polk, Osceola and Orange counties, they are in most cases the
primary source for food since many are still with out power or have lost
their homes.
The canteens are able to provide on the spot feeding of hot meals and can
move from area to area in order to meet the needs. These units are stocked
in the morning and restocked during the day with enough food to cook three
meals a day. So far since the storm hit, the canteens are serving an
average of 1,500 meals a day and it is expected by the end of the day on
Sunday some 75,000 meals will have been served.
The canteens are usually manned by a two to three person crew who have been
trained by The Salvation Army in disaster response. Each Salvation Army
center in the state has a mobile canteen unit that is used for both small
local disasters and large scale events such as a major hurricane. The 43
canteen units from Florida are being assisted in this effort with
additional canteens from Salvation Army units in Georgia, Alabama and
Mississippi.
The Salvation Army is in need of financial contributions. Donations can be
sent to any local Salvation Army, earmarked "Disaster Relief' or on line at
www.salvationarmyusa.org or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY (725-2769)
