The good folks who support the APRS programs are intimately involved with NMEA
0183. The rest of us just use the software mostly.
As always, getting the units to agree on baud-rate and protocols is important
-- how many stop bits, parity even / odd / mark / space / ignore, hardware or
software flowcontrol. The GPS unit manual should specify whatever parameters
aren't settable on the unit's setup menu.
A quick Google search [NEMA 0183 parity] gives us definitive answer on the
"standard" value for those settings.
