Monthly Oklahoma Section News Summary
The Hurricane Amateur Radio relief continues in Florida and other states, by
now. Thanks to all, including many from the OK Section for their support in
time, effort and equipment. Your efforts are so meaningful and important to
so many. All the more reason to be prepared with equipment and training to
respond.
The Route 66 2004 project is now history but what a splendid time it was. Two
sites in the Oklahoma Section were sponsored by the Western OK ARC(W0ARC) in
Elk City and the OKC Autopatch Association. These were two of the 15 sites
along Route 66 with all pertinent states except Kansas having host stations.
The stations in OK totaled over 1500 contacts with different modes and mobile
stations active putting Route 66 on the air. What a great time it was to help
make contacts at both sites in OK. Thanks to Marv-KC5VF and Ted-AA5CK- WOARC
President, for hosting the Elk City visit and supporting the effort. Now if
we could convince Marv to put up a decent aerial perhaps contacts would come
some easier....hi A productive afternoon was spent at the OKC Autopatch
effort held at the Citadel. Neat station, as well. Dave-NE5S, Central OK
Radio Amateurs President and Jim-N5OHL, Section Affiliated Club Coordinator
were knocking down the contacts pretty regular. The nine day Route 66 event
provided a good opportunity to build friendships and operating capability.
Both imperative at time of emergency communication.
On Saturday September 24 the Enid ARC will be hosting an ice cream social and
flea market event. It will be held at the Red Cross Building in Enid. The
day will be an opportunity to bid farewell to John-KA7GLA as he is moving out
of the OK Section. Speaking of time to honor KA7GLA, past OK Emergency
Coordinator, a super dinner was held in Enid on September 15 for that purpose.
A great turnout of John's friends was present to see John receive a sharp
plaque recognizing his public service effort. It was enjoyable to have
Eddie-K5EMS, Assistant SM, Lucien-KD5LPV Section EC and Dean-KL7MA Section
Official Observer Coordinator in attendance.
On Friday September 17 a group of Amateur Radio operators from the Shawnee
area gathered for their weekly lunchtime. Goodness what a gathering of
characters! Just glad Regina-KK5FX was on hand to keep the group under
control. When Gil-W5NUT is around Regina may need some help. Clif-N5UW was
given a certificate of merit from the Oklahoma Section for all he does and has
done to support, encourage and role model healthy Amateur Radio operating.
Thanks to Earnie-K5YKD for the fellowship and ride.
The Tulsa Amateur Radio Club (TARC) will be celebrating their 80th anniversary
on Saturday September 25. The event will be held at the neat setting of
Chandler Park. TARC web site is http://w5ias.com/
Looks like it will be a superb event with hearty congratulations to TARC!
Gregg-W5GGW indicates the following about the event:
I hope everyone that possibly can, will come out and celebrate with the other
attendees. Bring your stuff for the tailgate swap too! We will setup starting
at 9:00am, and start the activities around 10:00am, and go until about 4:00pm.
The club will provide lunch for the first 100 or so members that show up or
until the food is gone. We'll have hamburgers and hotdogs and brisket
sandwiches. We'll also provide ice water. If you'd prefer a soda, or iced tea
or something else non-alcoholic, you'll need to bring that with you. There
will also be a birthday cake. We'll operate an HF station during the time we
are out there, so if you'd like to help out with some of the operations,
please come over to the trailer while you are out there. We'll try and work in
as many people as possible. Red, W5UW is working on a nice card for us to send
out to contacts that send us a card.
The Tulsa Repeater Organization (TRO) has a great project underway. Club
President Mark-N7XYO and Section Public Information Coordinator has an
informative narrative about the project which reads as follows: The TRO has
teamed up with BLUE STAR MOTHERS OF AMERICA, INC. OKLAHOMA DEPARTMENT to
support our troops. Amateur Radio operators know that, along with becoming a
licensed Amateur Radio operator comes the duty to serve the public in times of
need. Our troops do not need your support with communication, but they truly
need your support. No matter what your view is on the current world events,
we as Americans need to support our men and woman serving our nation around
the world. All Amateur Radio operators are invited to donate the contents of
FREEDOM BOXES or donate funds that are used to mail the Freedom Boxes to our
troops overseas. For more information visit www.TulsaHamRadio.org or email

Congratulations to the Ada ARC for getting recognition in the October QST
(page 79). The club was cited in the Media Hits column and states the
following:
The Ada Evening News in Oklahoma ran a story July 14 entitled "Amateur Radio
Saves the Day." The report described how five local hams who were assisting
as a Fourth of July celebration suddenly shifted gears when a 3-year old child
became lost. The hams, along with Kiwanis Club members, fanned out to cover
the entire park and found the youngster within 5 minutes.
