Pryor --- Community Emergency Response Team train-the-trainer class has
been scheduled for November 11-14, announced Jane Standeford, Citizen
Corp Council chair for Mayes County.
"The training is the first step in getting local Citizens prepared for
disasters by developing Citizen Emergency Response Teams," said
Standeford. "Those trained at this session will become a cadre of
instructors who can train Citizen groups around the area."
CERT members are trained to work as a team, light rescue, basic fire
suppression, etc.
"They learn what to do and what not to do before the professional
firefighters, medics, and officers arrive on the scene," said Lloyd
Colston, director of Mayes County Emergency Management.
CERT train-the-trainer is not just for police, fire, and medics. In
other words, the goal is to have Citizen participation in this process as
well.
"We want to train those who will likely be first at the scene," said
Colston, "rather than responders who already know this information."
Groups such as Amateur Radio Clubs, churches, youth organizations, civic
groups, and areas of development such as Cedar Crest and Lakemont Shores
are all encouraged to take CERT training as well as sending one or two
representatives to the Train-the-Trainer class.
The training is free. Students completing the training will receive a
Go-Kit. Teams trained are also eligible for a Team Kit.
The CERT concept was developed, initially, by the Los Angeles Fire
Department. The Citizen can find information about this program at
http://www.cert-la.com/ while http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/cert/ is
