[ARRL-OK] "When all else fails"

I must agree that FD can be utilized for several purposes. Practice for
emergency communications is essential and to do it on a schedule once every
year give us in the hobby the chance to promote it. We have plenty real life
activations to keep us on our toes.

My first FD experience was a bit disappointing when I first got my ticket. I
expected to see a lot of really neat stuff and possibly learn even more
about the hobby. To my amazement I attended a function where everyone seemed
too caught up in what they were doing to take any time to welcome a
newcomer. I felt like a real outsider and I vowed at that time to do
something about it. Just imagine what kind of message that cold reception
could have sent to someone who was simply looking at the hobby and its
participants for the first time! Granted there are tasks to accomplish
during FD but I strongly urge each FD gathering to designate a few people to
serve as guides for those that arrive and are curious and publicize the
event locally! FD is an event that we can use to promote our hobby to the
general public and to the media. Lets make full use of the opportunity that
presents itself every year!

Catfish??? Bottom feeders, same as lawyers and politicians.

Beside that, FD can and should help to sort out what gear
and other things are needed.

Please spare me the volunteers who have done nothing
but ragchew. They are more trouble than they are worth
without training. Give me the contesters every time!!!

What am I doing for FD 2003? I'm staying home and do ANYTHING but turn on
the HF!
Why you ask? Would it not be nice if ALL emergency's had a lead time? That
is what FD is
to me. In a real emergency you have NO lead time! Grab and go! Yes I have
done FD in the
past but they were club functions where food and fellowship was prime over
operation. I would
liked to see FD changed so as to having ARRL task, over the air, each FD
operation with a NO NOTICE
on the air operation which would include a NTS message. It is a shame that
amateurs can not
write and pass even a simple message to the SM!!!!!

But to those that do FD MAKE IT SAFE AND HAVE FUN!!!

PS: the AAARC has a Fall Bash instead of FD each year at K5LEE's rocky top
ranch.
I'll give you the date so you can come over and see how the East side lives.
But you got to like cat fish! Lee fishes all Summer long to have enough for
the bash!
