The 509 (atleast) has always had a problem with the dial string. The main
tuning knob takes up the dial string and a small elastic cord returns it.
The issue has been the elastic cord loses it;s ability to stretch after a
while. I think I have a solution.
I have replaced the elastic chord and dial string (I think it was
polyester) with a continuous run of kevlar thread and a small spring. Rge
Kevlar thread (size "E") makes one goes from the pointer, through the
right hand side pulleys, to the main tuning knob. There it makes a single
wrap around the shaft and continues to the left hand side pulleys. It does
not engage the pin on the main shaft. From the pulleys the kevlar thread
returns to the pointer, with a small spring in line. This spring is from a
relay which gladly donated it. The spring maintains tension in the kevlar
line.
So far, about one week, it has worked flawlessly. The Kevlar does not
stretch and has sufficient friction to the main dial shaft for movement.
If this works out and there is interest I will draw up / phot more details
later.
