AReU Meeting for December 2006 REPORT by Ron KA4INM
Tony W4TAS was running around somewhere else and couldn't be with us this month.
There weren't many, but I think we all had a good time. We had several antenna analyzers
there and we looked at 3 roof mount kind of 2 meter and 2 meter + 70 cm antennas,
one dual bander is home made, the other was a "HAMfest" special.
I mentioned then and wish to repeat some facts about antennas here.
Most HAMs concern them self with the VSWR of antennas as they tune them,
the most important aspect to tuning ANY antenna is the frequency the
capacitance and inductance of the antenna are equal at the frequency that
we wish to use it on, within the limitation of that antenna.
When the inductive and capacitive reactance's are equal at a frequency
the antenna is resonant at that frequency. The transmit and receive
efficiency is usually `the best it can be' when the antenna is resonant on
the frequency we wish to use.
The true VSWR is primarily a function (if you wish to control it beyond having
the antenna resonant on the frequency we wish to use) by using the feed line
(impedance) that most closely matches the feed point impedance of the antenna.
Antennas are very important to we HAMs.
