Dick, we have been incorporated as a non-profit for about three years
now. This was necessary for a couple of reasons - to obtain 501c3 status
for one. This allows us to accept tax deductible (for them) donations from
businesses. It also provides us some protection in the liability area. It
was quite a process to go through (develop corporate bylaws, etc), but once
it was done we were set. Be sure to have an attorney look over things. We
had some law students at the University of Illinois help us out, and yet we
still stumbled over one bit of wording over which the state withheld
tax-exempt status for a time.

Hi Steve,

I'm up here in McHenry County in Illinois and the local ESDA group, which
includes both ARES and RACES, are thinking about getting non-profit status
and getting a 501(c)3. Can you share what your group did to get this and
what problems you ran into.

Thanks

Jim
