[ARC5] A crystal Substitute

Hi

These substitutes typically fall short in two areas:

1) Phase noise

2) Spurs

Neither one will directly impact sensitivity. Your radio still will come up at
0.5 uV (or whatever) just like with the crystal.

Item 1 will impact the adjacent channel selectivity. If you had (say) -70 db
with the crystal. You might have less with the substitute. How much less is
a “that depends” sort of thing. It could easily be 10’s of db.

Spurs are going to bring in more “birdies” as you roam around. Since most radios
already have these issues to some degree, working out which ones are not
present with the substitute (but not before) can be fun.

Yes, with enough test gear you can indeed see what’s what.
