Thanks for pointing that out. I found the schematics and saw the 1700kc xtal in the “2nd oscillator” so I could use one of those si5351 crystal substitute circuits in that role.
As much as I want this to be all vintage I’m not so much a purist that I would hold back a build.
I recall seeing the bc453 IF cans so now it makes sense.
Luckily I have some spare IF cans in my parts box to dedicate to this project.
It’s coincidental the other RX designs happened to have the 1700kc xtal as a filter.

I built the HBR-14 and 16 in the early 60’s. There was no crystal filter in those. The first IF was high and the second IF used 85 KHz IF transformers from an ARC-5 receiver, which could have adjustable BW by varying the separation between the primary and secondary coils. The 1700 KHz crystal was to down convert the second if to 85 KHz. 73 – Mike
