Tim, and all: there was / still may be  a 2 meter "on-glass" antenna that linked to the coax thru glass.
Of course, there is much more challenge to this at HF freqs. 
BTW, i have an old 'CB era' antenna that connects INSIDE the vehicle to points above and below the 
windshield. I was told that these were not really uncommon but i had never seen the idea before. 
I have to wonder, tho, about the QRN level and i suspect, any higher power might give the onboard
computers fits.
