Because of Washington's usual bureaucratic idiocy,
requiring the NDB owner to pay for pointless FAA involvement
while you change a fuse, NDB maintenance is needlessly
expensive. If hams wanted to maintain them, the FAA would
likely insist on keeping its "turf" and its trivial income stream,
with the result that NDBs are decommissioned as soon as
there is a maintenance issue and not repaired, so the
drones still don't get the money.
IIRC, there are something around 30 still claimed to be
active in Texas, with some of those doubtless actually
down already. Once you could log that many at noon on
a summer day. Now, even the mighty 400-watt FT 365 KC
at Fort Worth has joined "The Halls of the Dead."
Makes me sad.
