They took CQD 372 in Erie, PA and ER 349 Fairview PA, off the air several years ago.
I loved DXing NDB's years ago. Best DX was "M" in New Orleans and got a QSL
for it. It was easy to get Canadians so close to Lake Erie, although I haven't listened in a while.

Perhaps I'm taking your statement on "nefarious activities" out of context. NDB's are still in use worldwide for aviation purposes. Based upon my loggings, I would say there are currently over 1000 in use in the United States and Canada.

As far as I know, the only folks using the beacon bands are people involved with various nefarious activities. They do not broadcast for any length of time, and move. A shame

Took quit a while in this lumbering monster seaplane. Somewhere I think I still have a wallet-sized cheat sheet card for the Fade-90 maneuver that is used to orient yourself on any 4-course range. That was THE most interesting segment of the RF spectrum until it all shut down in 1999. Up to that I usually kept a receiver bedside on the 500 kHz distress and calling frequency at night. I miss it more than anything else on radio.
