I miss hearing the Consolan station SFI, 192 kHz on my R-23/ARC-5. When it went off the air it was like loosing an old friend. Its circular array antenna, in Petaluma CA, was clearly visible from the air and its strong steady signal was easily heard in Los Angeles.

Part of my final check ride in the Martin PBM Mariner was reorienting myself on the Corpus Christi LF 4-course range while "under the hood" after the instructor deliberately got us "lost". Took quit a while in this lumbering monster seaplane. Somewhere I think I still have a wallet-sized cheat sheet card for the Fade-90 maneuver that is used to orient yourself on any 4-course range. That was THE most interesting segment of the RF spectrum until it all shut down in 1999. Up to that I usually kept a receiver bedside on the 500 kHz distress and calling frequency at night. I miss it more than anything else on radio.
