[ARC5] Fair Radio Fades Into the Gathering Darkness

David and others.

First off Fair radio is not chaos. The folks who work there know what is
there and just about right where it all is.

All you folks want some one to go and "rescue" goods that most complained
were too "expensive" for years.

As far as "cherry picking" items, haven't you any honor, morality or just
plain smarts.
Phillip Sellati has been in the business or at least around it since it was
started when he was a young lad of about 2 years.
To go to Fair Radio and expect to purchase the plethora of really fine
R390/390A radios for a few pennies a pound is not only foolish on your
assumptions, but unless you purchase it ALL, that's right ALL, then don't
expect the give away pricing. I personally know the source of the last
batch of those radios, and they were quite nice from a rabid collector who
apparently had little regard for money when good radios were available. It
took about three years for the gear to be collected from that source by a
good friend who then moved it on to Fair Radio.

If all you good folk want to "save" Fair Radio, form a company, either an
LLC or full blown corporation, get a loan from your favourite bank, as I am
rather certain you haven't the funds in your "piggy banks" go up to Lima
with the funds in hand and make a reasonable offer, keeping in mind you must
purchase the Real Estate as well, or have a good warehouse with retail
spaces to put all the treasure. Keep in mind that there are Triwalls, and
if you don't know what that is, then you don't know the surplus business, of
tubes and other equipment that have been "resting" awaiting opening since
the late "50's-60's. The folks there know what is out in them, as they are
essentially reserve stock.

Further, a good deal of the surplus electronics are now on the DLA Demil
list as DEMIL D, which means if the govt had it, it would only be sold as
SCRAP, with total destruction required before release from govt custody.
That equipment may not legally be exported without a proper Export License,
and in some cases the gummit can require an EUC for the material if they get
testy. Such just makes the gear more expensive as there is NONE to be had
from any government source as surplus. By the by, the R390A fits that
category. From some records I have reviewed, the R390A is still active
within the US Government stock list system, which makes one wonder just
where they are keeping or using them.

Take lots of pictures of Ben Franklin and pay a reasonable price to save the
treasure.

I hate to say it, but Phil isn't going to move a significant fraction of
that chaos even at pennies-a-pound.
There just aren't enough of us left who have the room or money.

What he needs is a few knowledgeable, hard-headed guys who know what's truly
"rare" and what's "common," cherry-pick those things out, along with the
more sought-after connectors and popular accessories, then hire a back-hoe
and contract a scrap dealer.

We could organize groups to "rescue" of some popular categories, like a
group for Collins gear, a group for R-390, etc.-
groups of guys who would put in time and money to save their particular
interest from the back-hoe.
We'd also have to accept and forgive; saving it all, or even a significant
fraction of it, is impossible.

I'm not optimistic; we have lots of people who will cry "Save it! Save it!"
but when it comes time to take action, they disappear- won't contribute a
dollar or a weekend to save anything. As in any group of humans in any
field: there are 1000 talkers for every "do-er."

If we can't organize such groups, I guess the only thing to do is go as
individuals as soon as you can.
