I meant to write a little more: at one time, around the end
of WW-2, when these things were plentiful as surplus, there were
many articles on how to convert them to VFOs and also how to use
the very stable capacitors in receivers. I expect a search of
magazines of the period would produce a lot of these articles.
They were no doubt expensive boxes to make originally.
