FWIW, I recall my Dad operated a surplus telescoping mast as a vertical with a "loading" coil at the base & the RG-8 coax feed line want to an adjustable tap on the coil. The transmitter was a homebrewed twin 813 beast & I don't know what the matching circuit might have been.
