I use the autotransformer method also. It's switchable from 1:4 to 1:9 with 50 pf in series I can tune the 80 meter dipole or the 40 meter dipole as needed on the respective transmitters with the setup.
I'm not going to be a total naysayer, but I have a theory:Perhaps some of the impedance transformation is happening in the coax?
I seem to recall having this discussion a while ago. Different lengths of cable will change the match quite a bit, from working well to not at all.

Heh,
Dave - once upon a time a local ham made a contact from Michigan to
Australia on 160 meters. When his QSL card arrived he mentioned it on
the local two meter repeater. Our 160 meter guru started asking
questions about his amplifier and towers. The only had a modest dipole
and a barefoot ricebox for about 100 watts. Our guru denied such a thing
was even possible. He was invited to the coffee shop gathering to see
the QSL card. Even after seeing the card he denied it! Some people are
just plain hard-headed.
Nice job with the Photoshop :)
