We had a discussion about the use of the ARR-1 with the _ARB_ back in
February, Dave. The ARB doesn't require the pilot's control box.
Perhaps that was what you were recalling. KK5F gave a comprehensive
treatment of the installations, closing with, "The full ZB-*
installation with adapter, antenna relay, and control box is necessary
only for RU-* receivers CBY/CW-46051* or CBY-46064 in the later RU/GF
command sets. Such systems have several dual-band coil sets with one
band for the desired communications frequencies such as 3000 to 4525
kHz, and the other band 540 to 830 kHz for reception of precisely the
range of modulation frequencies used by ZB homing system YE or YG
transmitters."
The ARR-1 manual I posted at https://aafradio.org/docs/ZB-3&ARR-1.pdf
covers the RU installation fairly well - the last page shows all the
piece parts needed. I'm not sure the two position configuration figures
into the homing function. The pilot would have had complete
responsibility for getting back to the carrier in either single seat or
dual seat aircraft, and when in the homing freq mode I don't think you
wouldn't want the back seater to be doing much.
