Perhaps in the beginning - I don't have anything here about its initial 
design, but it could simply be a nod to an engineering firm or chief 
engineer.  Yardney isn't even listed in the NT 900109 list of 
suppliers.  Like much in wartime, production was likely contracted out.  
The two I have here were made by the Self Winding Clock Company in 
Brooklyn (Mfg. code CANE).

The control boxes were an evolving assortment, starting with a simple 
rotary switch in a small aluminum box.  The second generation appears to 
be one whose manufacturer is unknown, shown in a TBM installation 
below.  Three others are shown at the bottom of the page at 
https://aafradio.org/flightdeck/box.htm - the later control heads became 
more like production controls for the rest of the aircraft radios, with 
white inserts to write in frequencies.
