My father long ago told me about passing a large Italian airfield in North Africa, full of wrecked
airplanes. I said I would have loved to have scrounged thru the planes, but he replied that the
armor convoy he was with was not stopping for anyone. Later, in Germany, he and the other 
GIs did get their chance to strip ME-262s of souvenirs. An airfield based next to the German 
Autobahn, which used the highway as a landing strip.
