The main caution is that if you have one of the instruments, they are
probably still original dial face, which used radium and a fluorescent
compound to make them visible in the dark. The radium is still there, but
for the most the fluorescent is burned out by now.

Anybody's first guess has to be that it is the indicator for a DF receiver
or some form of ILS. But I agree with the comment that all of the ones I've
seen had very prominent "L" and "R" lettering. The only other notion I had
was that it might be an indicator for engine synchronization to avoid the
"beat note" created by two piston engines operating at slightly different
RPMs. Any takers?
