[ARC5] Recent auction

The three receivers in the auction have been modified, but that modification, if done correctly, is easily reversed.  The rarest item for the receivers is the shock mount , if it is original.  I think a combination of cabin fever and the receivers in near unmolested condition certainly drives the price.  So the price I'm asking for a complete SCR-274-N ( 2 transmitters, 3 receivers, modulator,  all the mounts, aircraft cockpit remotes, all cabling, etc, all restored to original configuration) isn't so out of line.  Never mind the HAM radio market, there is an aircraft restoration market for these radios, and the folks in that market have neither the patience or the expertise to find and get original radios put back into working condition themselves, so they have to pay for complete, original, restored radios if they want them for their projects.  Nobody is making any more of these radios. In many cases, restoring these radios, even cosmetically, isn't cheap either.  Complete, restored sets are a very rare thing to find. The same thing is driving the market for original US Army Ground Forces radios in the military vehicle market.  The ready availability of working World War Two era vehicle radios is a thing of the past. If vehicle owners want these really neat toys, they are going to have to pay for them, and in many cases are doing just that. Mark D.WW2RDO In a message dated 7/9/2021 11:21:01 AM Eastern Standard Time, arc5 at mailman.qth.net writes:
How much of the high much of the high prices is cabin fever? People just getting out after being cooped up. No hamfests for a year. Guys anxious for new projects. Maybe a little more free time for those working from home. I just think back to the past and how crazy things were at the first hamfest in the spring after the long winter layoff.                              Joe Connor On Friday, July 9, 2021, 11:16:08 AM EDT, Bob Groh <bob.groh at gmail.com> wrote:  The values for MANY of the radios (not just the ARC5 radios) in the latest auction were jaw dropping. Not sure why but the world right now is a bit wonky. Housing out of sight (although signs that market 'bubble' is peaking out), etc. For myself, my shelf is full of radios to restore so I am just off to the side watching and fondly remembering the 'old' days. Bob Groh, WA2CKY

I don't mean to start a big discussion on pricing because we all know a
thing is worth what a person is willing to pay for it, but the prices
realized by ARC-5 gear at the Schulman auction that closed last night
indicate that the value of intact and unmodified gear remains high:

While Schulman's auctions gain worldwide attention, auction prices are
not always the best representation of true value when egos and "auction
fever" kicks in!
