2N4416 10/$1 is right price for what they are, which is just a simple FET.

BTW, I have reservations about the referenced ss conversion article circuits.
Start with the circuit to replace the 12AX7 audio amp. The input transistor
stage has no feedback component of any kind to raise the input and output
impedance. One IF amp circuit shows both screen voltage B supply and filament
voltage rectifier. One IF amp circuit seems to have no ground return for the
supply voltage. The filament rectifier circuit doesn't make sense to me. Maybe
I will post the circuits here with my comments, maybe not. Maybe I am all
wrong. But sometimes mistakes are made by the draftsperson. Also, two
transistors direct connected does not automatically guarantee high input
impedance. I'll stick with my previous comment: the best way to go, seems to
me, is DGMOSFETs or cascode FET RF and IF stages. Heathkit's GR-78 has a
DGFET with diode AGC directly driving gate2, but the IF stages have an AGC
amp, so the AGC action may not be strong enough just directly driving gate2
off the AVC line. -Hue Miller
