This article uses bipolar transistors. Unfortunately it is easier to find tubes that bipolar transistors these days. I would use field effect transistors.
This site had conversions using 2N4416 FET's but the site is no longer active.
Does anyone know where to find this conversion article?

The 2N4416 is still available but pricy. There are cheaper plastic equivalents.
