Despite your conversations with German vets, the fact is, no handmike was issued for use with any German
manpack radio, and you can guess there would not be the informal acquisition channels available to the Allies;
nor would the crew of any Panzer be equipped each with their own hand mike. Consider how
impractical for the driver or the loader. Seems to have worked okay for them. I should look into how the
British fared with the 19 Set. Everyone comments that you had to yell into the microphones, and I think the
driver was directed by actual physical contact. I do have examples of the German microphone and before
I sell them, with the radios, I should add to my to-do list, to make a recording of their sound, and we'll settle
this. The German coast artillery and flak gun crews also used the same microphone, only the cord termination
was different. I recently sold a couple such headgear which included this microphone.
I understand the U.S. tank commander was provided a T-17 while the crew wore throat mics. This seems likely
that clarity was a concern in that.
Anything "Panzer" is quite pricey now, but auctions always are a wild card thing, prices vary extremely.
