The dummy balms were called “pumpkins” by the 509th.  They were shaped more circular than tubular hence the name, and were for used for Fat Man’s practice runs.

In the book The Grand Experiment at Inhokern it's mentioned that the Naval Ordnance Test Station at China Lake did tests of the shape of atomic bombs.  They also had a facility named Salt Wells Pilot Plant where the cast explosives (probably for Fat Man).

I have never heard anything about  test-drops with inert versions of either bomb, though there must have been many. I was at Albuquerque in I think 1958 or 59 when the press was first shown mockup versions of them, but no one said anything about those tests. - Gordon White
