These early intercept receivers provided the operator with a slightly improved probability of detection (POD) via sweeping the designated spectrum. Whether the Hallicrafters receivers, the APR-1( ), the APR-4( ), etc., they all provided real-time detection of enemy radar and communications emitters for defense purposes or to do such things as to ensure weapons fuse frequencies were not locally active. But, your question is a good one. One uses reception enhancements after a signal is detected. I sold my receivers, racks, and power supplies a while ago. Maybe not the best decision, in hindsite.
