Thanks for the info and discussion, Gents.

Before I do anything further, I am going to get some 'oscope photos of the waveforms.

I have three generators here, all the more modern non-inverter types. One is an early  2200 
watt unit, another is a 5500 watt unit with a bad connection to the field winding so it outputs 
only 103 VAC at the moment. I think I can fix that. The last is a 7500 watter, brand new.

I remember looking at the waveforms of the AC outputs of a PE-95 10kW genny, and a 
PE-75 2.5 kW genny, once, and they were a nearly perfect sine wave.

I still haven't figured out why these modern rigs' outputs are so crappy, and whether or not I 
should worry about it.

I DO like the idea of adding a 60 Hz filter after it. As one of you mentioned, circulating 
currents may be a big problem. We'll see. It is fun to experiment anyway.
