I once bought an HW-18 on ebay and the fool shipped it to me by USPS by simply wrapping it in paper, with no box, and sticking the mike inside to rattle around. Amazingly, it survived quite well.

But a Command Set transmitter mounted on a single rack did not come through so well. They stuck it in a cardboad box with some brown paper balled up around it as a cushion. The result is that the front panel is bent back, the antenna post destroyed, the top of the set bent into an S shape I have not had the courage to attempt a restoration yet.

As for that RR story, in Flroida near Haines City some time back a "lowboy" truck with a large GE turbine on it was attempting to cross a RR track to the destination power station a few hundred feet away. While they puzzled at how to get it off the track no one seems to have thought to inform the RR company, and a train nailed it.
