I don't know how and why the LF/MF Command Set transmitters were employed, but I do know that about 25% of all the B-29's based on Saipan were equipped with the Low/Medium frequency oscillator option on their ART-13's. This was so that such aircraft could serve as rendezvous beacons for other aircraft, which could find them by using their ADF sets.
Also they carried "ELTs" in their life rafts that broadcast on BCB frequencies so that search aircraft could find downed crews them using ADF. This was different gear from the Gibson Girl hand cranked emergency transmitters.
