This is sheer speculation, but I wonder if a possible use on a P-3
was to conduct plane to ship comms on frequencies like 2182, 2738
or other common HF maritime frequencies? My thinking is that a P-3
is a maritime patrol aircraft, and this would allow comms to a ship
and leave the plane's main HF radio free.
Again, just speculation, I have no evidence that this was the case.
I too, have an AN/ARC-39. Nice radio, and it came up very easily. It
is very easy to see clues as to its ARC-5 family ancestry.
