I am reminded of "Zeiss bumps" found on many old cameras.
Bumps under the leather covering. Comes from corroding screws
Might be from leather dressing soaking through or just something
used to cure the leather. The stuff in the leather can also cause
the thread used to sew cases to rot. No fix.
The problem with something that takes years is that its hard
to be sure what really caused it.
