To add to what Mike H said, the BC-224-A through –D and the BC-348-B through –D lacked the LF/MF band. This was required in all aircraft going OUTCONUS. BC-348-E and later were still 6-band sets but with each of the HF bands covering 1 or two MC more than did the early sets. I’ve no idea why the –C models were the only ones modified (maybe for some reason most of them hadn’t been issued) but that was the modification that created the –S.

Looks like this started life as a BC-348-C then was rebadged as a BC-348-S.
Anyone have knowledge of what the modifications were to go from -C to -S?
