[ARC5] T17/ARC-5 transmitter--looking for one...

I used the article in Command Sets to build a 160 meter transmitter with a BC-457.  It worked rather well, and the VFO ended up covering 1.6 to 2 mc across the entire dial which meant the bandspread on 160 was quite good.  Still, it's easier to put a T-18 on160 than to re-do the 457.  Rewinding the 457's oscillator coil wasn't easy as it is important to keep tension on the wire as thewinding is done, in order to maintain oscillator stability
The T-18 or its ATA equivalent is relatively common and they show up on eBay from time to time..
Don't ask me how long ago this 457 conversion  was done; it's too scary.... and I didn't use a pristine example; someone elsehad been into it, trying to put it on 80 meters.

Well, I am finding out how scarce they are.  The CQ/Cowan hackbook for Command Sets has winding datafor the BC-457A osc.and PA tank for 160 meters.  I have a rather nice untouched example, and one that is a mess (mud dabber nests, missing parts.)  I'm tempted to modify the junker coils and try them in thebetter 457A, but I will look for a T-18 first.... lest I end up getting tar and feathered.

Of all the transmitters commonly lumped under "ARC-5"
which were ever in actual production, the two most difficult
to acquire are the *1st-Run* SCR-274N BC-696
and the AN/ARC-5 T-17.   Only example of the early 696 I know
is in my collection in rough shape.  There are quite a few
T-17s around, but they aren't often offered for sale, so are
almost as hard to acquire.  If you want to operate 160 meters,
the ATA  and T-18 2.1-3.0 MC are very easy to rubber-down
and work fine there.
