[ARC5] Battery Report

I just replied to another message in this thread. I had
problems with Duracell and Kirkland (same) AA and AAA cells but
not D cells or 9V batteries. Duracell seems to have had a
production problem. The cells were off the market for months and
came back with a ten year guaranteed shelf life. I tried the new
ones and so far they seem fine. Older AA cells have two little
dimples on the negative end, the new ones do not.
I have also used Sunbeam brand from the 99c store with good
results although they do not seem to have the capacity of the
more expensive cells. Also Energizer cells are about the same as
Duracell. I mostly use Kirkland through Costco because of price.
I have several places which use packs of cells. One is in a
Hewlett-Packard 427A, a portable electronic volt/ohm meter.
Originally it used a 22-1/2 volt battery. These are now
expensive. I replaced it with a couple of multiple AA cell
holders. I open and check this thing every month or so to see if
the cells are leaking. So far they have not. Same in a couple of
other meters where I use packs of AA cells to replace former
large brick batteries.
Duracell also makes an industrial battery line called
Procell. I have a few meant for use in smoke detectors. So far
there has been no leakage problem but I don't use nearly as many
as I do of the Duracell or Kirkland brands. This leakage problem
seems to have been unique to Duracell. While all batteries or
cells can leak mostly it takes many years. These things would
become leaky when still unused in their boxes.
My guess is that Duracell made a concerted effort to find
and correct the problem because it would have put them out of
business otherwise.
