There were several “Black Cat” squadrons in the Pacific Theater. The term “ Black Cat” , in this instance, refers to the all black paint job applied to the PBY’s equipped with RADAR Altimeters to allow for low level nighttime operations. There were also “MAD” Cats that were equipped with Magnetic Anomaly Detectors that were used to hunt enemy submarines, as well as regular patrol bombers that performed in roles like daytime reconnaissance and air-sea rescue. Dad flew in all three types of PBY.
