Al:

Thanks for the note. Yes, I found that Wiki article after I sent my original email to this reflector. I sent a revised email to my local radio club, which included the expanded list of indigenous Nations that had contributed to WW2. I also added the bit about the Cherokee and Choctaw during WW1 and that THAT fact probably drove Uncle Adolf to send his “linguists” stateside during the 30s.

     Stay safe and healthy, y’all.

Gene, et al,

There a pretty thorough Wikipedia article <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_talker> . It seem we used Cherokee and Choctaw on the field phones during WWI, so I guess the Krauts might have been on to us.

Thanks for the reminder. I did a bit of Wiki searching a few years back and found that several other indigenous American nations contributed members to the Code Talker cohort during WW2. IIRC, Code Talkers also came from the Comanche, Cherokee and Lakota Nations, and possibly others.

Another tidbit I uncovered is that such Code Talkers were deployed primarily in PTO. During the 1930s, the Fibbies had known that Adolph had sent “linguists” to the US to “study” indigenous languages. It was for that reason that, once war broke out, the War Dept. decided on only limited use of Code Talkers in ETO, primarily during Operation Overlord.

Thanks to all of these departed radio “brethren” for their service to their country.
